Hemkund Sahib is one of holiest place in the Uttarakhand. It is mostly dedicated for 10th Guru of Sikh religious Guru Govind Singh ji and also dedicated to Hindu religion gods in the time of Lord Rama. Hemkund Sahib is located at the altitude of 4329mts above from the sea level. Hemkund Sahib is also known as Lokpal Lake. It is situated in the Chamoli Districts in Uttarakhand state. The Meaning of Hemkund is Hem means Snow and Kund means Pond so we can say it the pond of snow.
This place is fully covered by snow in the winter season. The Sacred Gurudwara near the lake is one of the most pilgrims center of Sikh religion and every year many of Sikhs and Hindus are came here from all over the world. The Hemkund Lake is about approx 2 Kms in circumference. And you can also see the water mirror image of the peak Saptashringa.
The Hemkund Lake is the source of Laxman Ganga stream also known as hem Ganga that merges with Pushpawati River flowing from the Valley of flowers in the Ghangaria and at this place the stream is known as Laxman Ganga. And Lokpal temple is also situated at the near of Hemkund sahib dedicated to Lord Laxman, brother of Hindu God Rama.
Hemkund Sahib is 19 kms trekking route from the Govind Ghat which is connected by roads transport. The 13 kms trekking route is take you at Ghangaria and after 6 kms trek from Ghangaria you will reach at Hemkund Sahib, enroute you will see the many pine trees and many other wild flowers including the Brahma Kamal (State flower of the Uttarakhand).
How to Reach:-
Trekking Route: - Hemkund sahib is 19 km trek distance from the Place Govindghat. The place between Govindghat and Hemkund is Ghangaria, which is also a base camp for visitor and tourists. Govindghat is well connected through roads transport with Joshimath.
By Trains: - Nearest Railway station is Rishikesh, and the distance is 293.
By Air: - Nearest Airport is Jolly Grant Dehradun, and the distance is 213 kms.
